Brazil overpowered Scotland in a 3-0 win on Wednesday to qualify for the World Cup knock-out stage as Group C winners, while Morocco are also through as runners-up after coming from behind twice to beat Haiti 4-2.

The Brazilians broke the deadlock in the seventh minute in a disastrous display of the Scottish defence. Vinicius Junior took advantage of it to tap the ball into an empty net.

Vinicius Jr had a second goal disallowed in the 22nd but it counted when he found the net again shortly before the break as Scotland again failed to clear the ball away.

Matheus Cunha completed the win in the 60th, smashing a cross from Bruno Guimarães between the posts.

"We've achieved our first objective, but we have to keep going. It was a difficult group. Now the real competition begins. It's like the Champions League – there's no point finishing top of your group if you're not ready afterwards," Brazil captain Marquinhos said.

The match marked the return of Neymar, who hadn't played for the national team since October 2023. He missed the first two group stage matches at the World Cup due to injury.

Haiti scored their first World Cup goal since 1974 to take the lead against Morocco in the 10th. Lenny Joseph flicked the ball into the net but FIFA credited the goal to Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou.

Achraf Hakimi levelled in the 39th but Haiti were ahead again in the 43rd through Wilson Isidor. Morocco, however, hit back before the break and equalized again thanks to Ismael Saibari.

They took the lead for the first time in the 78th with Soufiane Rahimi finishing off a corner and Gessime Yassine completed the turnaround in the 89th.

"At times we lacked humility and paid the price for it. We weren't fully committed in the duels, we gave them confidence and allowed them to grow into the game and score twice," Morocco midfielder Bilal El Khannouss said.

Scotland will still hope to qualify to the knock-outs as one of the best third-placed teams but Haiti are out.

The best eight out of the 12 third-placed teams go through to the first knock-out round in the expanded 48-nation tournament. The third-placed rankings will only be confirmed at the end of the group stage.

"We lost poor goals at poor times against a team with quality who can punish you. The lads are gutted. We fell short on quality, but we gave it absolutely everything. Whether or not we go through, we'll see in the next few days," Scotland midfielder John McGinn said.

Brazil too strong for sloppy Scottish defence

Scotland started the match in the worst possible way. Scott McKenna attempted to play out from the back but was chased by Rayan, who blocked the tackle and the ball landed at Vinicius Jr's feet. The Real Madrid forward left keeper Angus Gunn behind and tapped the ball into the net.

Vinicius Jr was again on target in the 22nd thanks to another defensive fiasco but his goal was ruled out due to a foul in the build up.

He eventually got his second before the break. Scotland failed time and again to clear the ball away and it ended up with Bruno Guimarães. He found Vinicius Jr, who headed it home from close range.

Scotland had their best moment in the 49th when Scott McTominay met Kieran Tierney's superb cross with a header but Alisson stood strong to deny him.

Vinicius Jr almost got a hat-trick when finishing off a counterattack in the 51st but Gunn made a save.

Brazil, however, got their third in the 60th. Guimarães dribbled the defender before finding Cunha, who smashed the ball into the net.

Brazil will now face the runners-up of Group F, which could be Netherlands, Japan or Sweden. Morocco will take on the winner of that group.
