MANILA, Philippines — Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday said business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan was also summoned by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to appear before its fact-finding probe into the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) basketball players.
Meanwhile, ADMU president Father Roberto Yap faced CIDG investigators on Wednesday.
For nearly two weeks, the CIDG had summoned various individuals, mostly players, coaching staff and university officials to shed light into the drowning of Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.
“Tomorrow we will summon Manny Pangilinan," Remulla told reporters in an ambush interview on Wednesday morning.
Remulla said their investigation was almost complet, having gathered “conclusive” details from interrogations from people involved, conducting intensive investigation and even reconstructing the crime scene.
He said in Filipino that the findings would be submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the filing of charges.
"Let’s just wait for our complete investigation on Friday so that we can see what we can share with you," said Remulla still in Filipino.
The PNP said the basketball program of ADMU was autonomous from the university and managed by the foundation of Smart Communications owned by Pangilinan, hence the reason for his subpoena.
Investigators, the PNP said, were looking into the culpability of the university as well as Smart Communications in the drowning incident.
Throughout the course of the investigation, Remulla said they have interviewed over a hundred people and collected over 1200 pages of testimonies from people who were at the crime scene.
Remulla said the case build up was "conclusive" and the CIDG was "very confident."
