KOTA KINABALU: Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Madius Tangau (pic) has urged the Federal Government to address the severe traffic congestion along the main Tamparuli route and to consider upgrading the Tamparuli–Ranau road into a highway.

He raised the matter during a recent Dewan Rakyat sitting, asking the Works Minister about specific measures to ease congestion between Pekan Nabalu and Pekan Tamparuli, as well as from Berungis Roundabout to Tamparuli town.

In a written reply, the Works Ministry said the route is part of Federal Route 22 and confirmed there has been no official application from the Sabah State Government under the 12th or 13th Malaysia Plan for the proposed upgrade.

The ministry said the proposal could be considered once submitted through the State Economic Planning Unit (Upen) and the Sabah Public Works Department (PWD), adding that focus is now on completing Pan Borneo Highway Phase 1 by 2028, with Phases 2 and 3 covering Tamparuli–Ranau and Tawau–Kimanis routes pending review.

It added that RM3.97 million was allocated for road maintenance in Tuaran between 2023 and 2024, with a further RM21.7 million proposed for 2025, alongside ongoing works to expand the Berungis–Serusup stretch and repair a slope along Jalan Kota Kinabalu–Sandakan.
