The Carabao Cup continues with the first Premier League representatives entering the competition at the second-round stage.
Chelsea and Tottenham have been drawn at home to Luton and Charlton Athletic respectively, while Nottingham Forest face off against Leeds in the only all-Premier League tie of the round.
The 11 top-flight teams not playing European football this season join those to have progressed through the first round, with Brentford facing a potentially tricky visit to second-tier Birmingham City, Newcastle at home to West Bromwich Albion and the winners of tonight’s last opening-round tie between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter to face newly promoted Coventry.
Relegated West Ham, Wolves and Burnley were among the weekend winners reaching this stage, and will now play Championship opposition Southampton, and League One sides Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford respectively.
The cup competition remains regionalised for now with the qualifiers split into a north and south section to ease travel demands, limiting the pool of possible opponents for each of the sides. The second-round ties will be played in the week commencing 24 August.

Millwall keeper Lukas Jensen's heroics secure penalty shootout win
Monday 10 August 2026 19:10 , Flo CliffordMillwall goalkeeper Lukas Jensen saved all four QPR spot-kicks as the Lions won on penalties at Loftus Road to secure a place in the second round.
The visitors prevailed 2-0 in the shootout after a late own goal by Mark Sykes cancelled out Luke Cundle’s second-half opener in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.
Jensen superbly kept out efforts from Ilias Chair, Harvey Vale and Koki Saito before his save from Kwame Poku sealed the victory.
Camiel Neghli and Tairyk Arconte had their penalties saved by Pierce Charles, but Jake Cooper and Sykes scoring was enough to take the south London side through.
West Ham begin life after relegation with win as David Sullivan watches Carabao Cup success
Monday 10 August 2026 19:00 , Flo CliffordTaty Castellanos scored twice in an emphatic comeback win as West Ham beat Portsmouth 3-1 in front of the largest-ever crowd at a Carabao Cup first-round match.
The Argentinian’s brace helped get the Hammers’ season off to a winning start and propelled them through to the second round, two months after suffering Premier League relegation.
It also gave their rowdy fans something to cheer about on a day when under-fire West Ham co-owner David Sullivan sat in the stands, despite being advised not to attend by London Stadium operators amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct – which he strongly denies.

Tottenham revel in survival – now they must learn the lessons of a nightmare season
Monday 10 August 2026 18:50 , Lawrence OstlereWhen the full-time whistle blew, James Maddison bent over on his haunches gasping for breath. Kevin Danso collapsed in a heap. Roberto De Zerbi ran onto the pitch like he’d won a trophy before remembering himself and turning back to shake hands with David Moyes. All around them, Tottenham fans erupted with relief.
This could have been Spurs’ lowest ebb, on an afternoon when relegation loomed and smirking Arsenal fans passed them on the Victoria Line. Instead, this was a day of shared joy and collective catharsis. In those lost weeks under Igor Tudor, Spurs fans were resigned to their fate; just a few games later, the nightmare is over, for now at least.

The ticking clock that faces Xabi Alonso in the cursed Chelsea job
Monday 10 August 2026 18:40 , Will CastleAnd so it begins, again. A new boss is through the door at Chelsea. Ambition and alignment are the buzzwords of the day. But for Xabi Alonso, the challenge of prolonging these positive sentiments beyond next May is blatant – it is the curse of the job he’s signed up for.
Alonso is well-versed in the ruthless reality of management; seven months at Real Madrid will do that to you. He now finds himself at Chelsea, another club infamous for its turnover in the dugout. No Chelsea manager has lasted longer than two years since Antonio Conte, the man who also won the club their last Premier League title. Patience is scarce at Stamford Bridge, where four managers have left mid-season in the past five years.
He joins after Chelsea dropped into crisis at the backend of last season, plummeting to 10th and missing out on European football entirely with squad discipline waning. Alonso will need time to build his own culture to deliver the results the ownership so desperately crave, but he can’t be sure if he’ll get it.
