A series of theft and election-related cases were registered across Kapurthala district on May 24, 2026, with police initiating investigations into incidents reported from Sultanpur Lodhi, Sadar Phagwara and City Kapurthala police stations.

In the first incident, Sultanpur Lodhi Police registered a case under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following a complaint lodged by Harjinder Singh, a resident of Gajipur Colony, Golden Avenue, Sultanpur Lodhi.

The complainant stated that he and his wife were sleeping in their house on the night of May 21 when unidentified persons allegedly broke into their residence by breaking the rear-side window grills and iron rods.

According to the complaint, the accused broke open cupboards and decamped with approximately eight tolas of gold jewellery, Rs 8,000 in cash and two passports belonging to the couple. Police said the articles were found scattered inside the house during the morning inspection. A case has been registered against unidentified persons and further investigation is underway.

In another theft case, Sadar Phagwara Police registered under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the complaint of Manohar Singh, a resident of Charda village.

The complainant informed police that he had tied his cattle inside his farmhouse on the evening of May 23 and returned home. However, when he visited the cattle shed around 3 am the next day, several animals were found missing.

During a search, four animals were recovered from outside the village, but four buffaloes and one bull were still untraceable. The complainant alleged that unidentified persons had stolen the livestock during the intervening night of May 23 and 24. The police have launched an investigation into the theft.

Poll code violation reported

Meanwhile, City Kapurthala Police registered an FIR under Sections 221 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act against several persons accused of violating election campaign restrictions ahead of the municipal corporation elections scheduled for May 26.

Acting on a tip-off, police reached Mehndipura Chowk where several individuals, including local residents identified as Sekha Pradhan, Sukha Pradhan, Raja, Sonia and others, were allegedly campaigning despite the enforcement of the mandatory 48-hour silence period before polling.

The police team further stated that the accused continued the campaign activity even after being informed about the Election Commission guidelines and allegedly obstructed police duty while raising slogans.
