Selangor's Menteri Besar, Amirudin Shari, has shed light on the difficulties authorities faced in uncovering the activities of Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH). Speaking to the media, he noted that the organization had shifted its operations towards business ventures and restricted its activities to family members, complicating oversight efforts.
Amirudin explained that following the recent exposure of serious allegations surrounding GISBH, particularly involving unregistered welfare homes, many entities associated with the organization changed their tactics. "After the case came to light, it became evident that GISBH had moved towards business operations, which made it harder to monitor them effectively," he stated. He emphasized that by limiting their activities to family members, GISBH further obscured their operations from public scrutiny.
In light of these developments, Amirudin is set to meet with Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to provide updates on the situation. The Sultan had previously summoned key religious authorities and law enforcement to discuss GISBH and expressed disappointment that action was not taken sooner against the unregistered welfare homes.
The Sultan's concerns were echoed in Amirudin's comments, as he recognized the need for a stronger response from authorities. "I have received briefings from various parties, and we are committed to taking decisive follow-up actions. I look forward to updating the Sultan on our progress," he stated.
The Sultan's dissatisfaction highlights the urgency of the matter, especially as he recently ordered the immediate closure of all unregistered welfare homes and Islamic schools associated with GISBH. In response, Fahmi Ngah, an executive councillor responsible for Islamic affairs, confirmed that a detailed report on GISBH's activities will be submitted to the Sultan within the week. This report is expected to outline both the actions taken thus far and the plans moving forward.
The recent police raids on September 11, which targeted 20 welfare homes linked to GISBH across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, resulted in the rescue of 402 children. Investigations revealed alarming allegations, including instances of sexual abuse among the children. These shocking findings have prompted a critical examination of the oversight mechanisms in place for organizations like GISBH.
Despite the gravity of the situation, GISBH has denied any wrongdoing and refuted allegations connecting them to the abuse cases. The organization’s responses have sparked further debates regarding the effectiveness of monitoring bodies and the protection of vulnerable individuals within such establishments.
