Charged with possessing 68gm cannabis

Kota Kinabalu: A 46-year-old man was charged in the Sessions Court here Tuesday with possessing 68.2 grammes of cannabis.

Darren Liau Shan Yin pleaded not guilty before Judge Monica Linsua to the charge.

He was accused of possessing the drug at about 5pm on Aug 3 at a house in Jalan Pantai Sembulan Baru, near here.

Liau was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read together with Section 39A(2) of the same Act.

The offence carries a jail term of between five years and life imprisonment, and whipping of at least 10 strokes, upon conviction.

The case will be mentioned again on Sept 21. No bail was offered pending a chemist’s report, as the charge does not provide for bail.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazriel Fardiansyah Abdul Kadir appeared for the prosecution, while Liau was represented by counsel Azhier Farhan Arisin.

In a separate case, eight illegal immigrants were jailed and fined for entering Sabah without valid documents.

Seven were sentenced to four months’ jail each, while another was fined RM4,000, or four months’ jail in default.

The eight were detained during operations in the city after they failed to produce valid identification or travel documents to Immigration Department personnel.

After serving their sentences or paying the fine, they were ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation.
