Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Charlayne Chong has been named in the national squad for the 2025 World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) to be held in Singapore next month.
The three-member squad will be led by reigning Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific champion Jeneath Wong and the other member is 2023 SEA Games bronze medallist Foong Zi Yu.
A total of 36 teams will compete for the Espirito Santo Trophy from October 1-4 at the Tampines Course of Tanah Merah Country Club with South Korea defending the championship.
The 23-year-old, who will be representing the country for the second time this year after the 7th Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific held in Vietnam in March, is delighted with the latest call-up.
“I’m really excited and honoured to be representing Malaysia at the World Amateur Team Championships in Singapore.
“Competing at Tanah Merah is a big opportunity for me to test my game against some of the best players in the world.
“My focus will be on staying composed, playing smart golf and contributing as much as I can to my team.
“It’s going to be a great experience and I’m looking forward to giving my best for my country,” she said.
Charlayne is currently in good form, having captured two titles at the UUM (Universiti Utara Malaysia) Open and the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Championship in July.
She also finished third in the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open in early August behind Indonesian Bianca Naomi Laksono and Filipina Samantha Dizon.
