Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has expressed strong confidence that the Sabah contingent will be able to achieve the target of securing 40 gold medals at the upcoming 22nd Malaysia Sports Games (Sukma) in Selangor scheduled to start on August 15.
He said this is based on the meticulous preparation efforts undertaken by athletes, coaches and the entire team management.
This year, Sabah Sukma contingent involves 943 members including 744 athletes will be taking part in 36 of the 37 sports being contested.
Speaking at the State flag handover ceremony to the Sukma and Para Sukma squads held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Tuesday, he emphasised that the goal transcends mere numbers.
“It reflects our confidence in our athletes’ preparation, the expertise of our coaches, and the effectiveness of our sports development system, which is continuously evolving,” he noted.
He encouraged the entire team to embrace the challenge of defending the State’s reputation on the national stage.
“I want every athlete to believe that this target can be achieved. We have the talent, experience and spirit required. What is important is that we compete with courage, focus and determination to give our best,” he said.
As for the Para Sukma to be held from September 5-11, he said the State is eyeing a total of 66 gold medals as they strive to regain the overall title.
With a contingent of 271 including 154 athletes, he expressed hope that at least 80 percent of the athletes will return with medals, underlining that each athlete must produce their very best while embodying high standards of sportsmanship.
Hajiji encouraged all athletes representing the State to compete with unwavering spirit and urged them to embrace a disciplined approach, as talent alone is not sufficient to reach the highest levels.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing any issues within the contingent promptly and professionally, ensuring that the focus remains on the competition.
In recognition of the athletes’ hard work, the Chief Minister also announced that the State Government would increase the winning incentives, including doubling the gold medal incentive from RM5,000 to RM10,000 as a gesture of appreciation for their sacrifices.
