Kota Kinabalu: The key to sustaining a clean environment and systematic waste management starts with individuals and communities, said Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah.
He said the effectiveness of cleanliness programmes depended on public attitudes and continuous efforts to prevent waste from accumulating in their surroundings.
His speech, delivered by City Hall (DBKK) Director-General Datuk Lifred Wong, was read during the 2026 Malaysia Clean-Up Day Mega Nationwide Cleaning Programme at Perdana Park, Tanjung Aru, here, Saturday.
Sabin said the annual event, held with the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), targets 200,000 participants nationwide and 28 tonnes of recyclable materials this year in an effort to set a new Malaysia Book of Records entry.
He said DBKK was also studying mechanisms for the purchase of recyclable materials, including drive-through collection of e-waste, but stressed that educating communities on proper waste management must remain a priority.
