Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old clerk was jailed 14 days on Wednesday for shoplifting.

Norandriani Herwan, who appeared before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali, for pre-trial case management informed the court that she wished to change her plea to guilty.

Norandriani admitted to stealing nine units of cosmetics comprising press powders foundations, perfumes and eyeliner at Guardian, on the second floor of Centre Point at 5.45pm on Oct 12.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ling Guong Zhin informed the court that on the said day, a worker saw Norandriani behaving in a suspicious manner while in the shop video surveillance showed she has been stuffing the cosmetic items into her bag and walking out without paying.

Norandriani was detained outside the premises and took out the items before trying to run away but was arrested by a security guard, said the prosecution.

She was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Unrepresented, Norandriani requested for a lenient sentence and begged not to be jailed on the grounds that she needed to continue working to support her ageing mother and her younger sibling who is wheelchair-bound due to a recent road accident and that she also needed to take care of her pet cat at home.

Norandriani added that she was remorseful for her action.

DPP Ling applied for an appropriate sentence and told the court that Norandraini has no conviction record and that the total loss was RM223.10 and all the items were recovered.

The court ordered Norandriani to serve the sentence from Wednesday.

Meanwhile, an undocumented man was charged with having a stolen motorcycle.

Md Shanill Basic, 25, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to having the stolen motorcycle belonging to Beckam Martin at 7pm on Nov 2 at Taman Sri Rugading, Tuaran.

Shanill allegedly committed an offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

The court set Jan 24, next year for pre-trial case management and ordered Shanill to be remanded further pending the date.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuted.
