Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid reports successful cloud seeding in Perak, with significant rainfall recorded at key dams to counter dry weather effects
KUALA LUMPUR: Cloud-seeding operations in Perak have successfully generated significant rainfall in key water catchment areas.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said rainfall between 29.3 millimetres and 84.8 millimetres was recorded at the Bukit Merah and Temenggor dams.
This provides an early boost to dam water levels previously affected by dry weather. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the National Disaster Management Committee chairman, shared the update on his Facebook page.
He attributed the success to a science-based approach and close monitoring by the Malaysian Meteorological Department and the Royal Malaysian Air Force. The operations had a clear impact within a short period.
The cloud seeding process was conducted using an RMAF C-130 Hercules aircraft. The technique involved dispersing salt solutions into towering cumulus cloud formations at altitudes between 5,200 and 7,000 feet.
MetMalaysia said the operation’s effectiveness was supported by high atmospheric moisture and unstable conditions. This boosted the development of rain clouds following the seeding process.
Operations will continue today in the southern parts of the peninsula. They will focus on several main dams in Johor and Melaka.
The focus in Johor will be the Machap, Upper Layang, Lower Layang, Lebam, and Pulai dams. In Melaka, operations will target the Durian Tunggal and Jus dams.
“We will continue to monitor requirements from time to time,” Ahmad Zahid said. He added the goal is to ensure every move has the best effect on water supply, agriculture, and public well-being.
“Let us all pray that these efforts will be facilitated by Allah SWT, and blessed with good results for all,” he added.
