Colombia vs Portugal LIVE: Ronaldo denied in thrilling Group K decider as DR Congo target World Cup knockouts

Colombia and Portugal battle for top spot in Group K as the World Cup knockout rounds near.

Roberto Martinez’s men made a slow start to the tournament with a drab draw against DR Congo heightening the scrutiny both on the manager and on record scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, but a thrashing of Uzbekistan represented a return to form. Progression as group winners will be secure with victory in Miami, though Colombia have looked in strong form so far and need only a draw to set up a meeting with a third-place finisher.

There is plenty to consider at the bottom of the group, too, with both DR Congo and Uzbekistan in theory capable of qualifying for the last 32. The African side are more strongly placed, and will book their spot in the knockouts with a win. Second spot is not out of reach – though a huge goal difference swing would be required...

81’ - The corner is cleared and Colombia are briefly three on three but Quintero runs into trouble.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

02:12 , Alan Smith

80’ - Ronaldo tries to find Leao with a cross from the left but it is deflected and loops out for a corner.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

02:10 , Alan Smith

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

02:08 , Alan Smith

76’ - Jhon Arias and an exhausted Rodriguez make way. Castano and Quintero are on.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

02:06 , Alan Smith

74’ - From the corner Suarez goes down in the box but replays show he kicked Mendes and it is the correct decision to play on.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

02:05 , Alan Smith

73’ - Colombia are pushing. Suarez goes close. Then Rodriguez has an attempt diverted over by Veiga.

DR Congo 1-1 Uzbekistan

02:03 , Alan Smith

Yoane Wissa has levelled in Atlanta. That would still not be enough for DR Congo to advance.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

02:02 , Alan Smith

70’ - Back underway. Two more Portugal changes: Joao Felix and Vitinha are off, Rafa Leao and Samu Costa are on.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

02:00 , Alan Smith

Hydration break. No boos because it is a hot and humid evening in Miami.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:59 , Alan Smith

67’ - Mendes is down with a head injury but play is allowed to continue. Arias shoots. It’s deflected and then saved for a corner. Rodriguez takes it. Then it is half-cleared as far as Puerta, who flashes wide. Blink and you will miss it.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:57 , Alan Smith

65’ - Suarez flashes a shot wide. It’s deflected for a corner, from which Sanchez nods tamely wide.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:54 , Alan Smith

62’ - And Rios goes close with his first touch! Santiago Arias slides a ball across from the right but the substitute is not sharp enough to finish, directing his attempt wide at the near stick.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:52 , Alan Smith

60’ - Felix finds Ronaldo with a through ball but, with no one around him, he scuffs a shot wide. No matter, the offside flag correctly goes up afterwards.

Two subs for Colombia: Cordoba and Lerma are replaced by Suarez and Rios.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:51 , Alan Smith

59’ - Felix now tries to find Ronaldo from the left but the main man cannot leap high enough.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:49 , Alan Smith

57’ - Felix, who has been really good, shoots along the deck. Sanchez blocks it.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:47 , Alan Smith

55’ - Lerma has a go from 25 yards. Costa punches it away firmly. Up the other end Jhon Arias does really well to stop Felix from advancing any further.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:46 , Alan Smith

53’ - Portugal are three on three with Felix in possession on the left. He tries to pass inwards where Fernandes dummies, thinking it will trickle on to Ronaldo. But there is not enough weight on it and Colombia clear. Fernandes immediately regrets that decision, throwing his arms in the air.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:43 , Alan Smith

50’ - Now Portugal take their time when building up from the back. Eventually a cross from Dalot is met by Felix but he is unable to direct his header on target. That’s a great chance on second viewing.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:40 , Alan Smith

48’ - The match has resumed at a tamer pace. I’m sure it will pick up soon.

Colombia are in possession, going nowhere fast.

Restarted! Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:37 , Alan Smith

Let’s hope for more of the same.

Two changes for Portugal at the break

01:36 , Alan Smith

Joao Neves and Diogo Dalot are on. Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves are off.

Half-time! Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:21 , Alan Smith

It’s the interval.

Rare is the game that can be scoreless but so entertaining.

There were 22 shots between the sides.

 (Reuters)

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:19 , Alan Smith

47’ - Mendes commits an awful foul on Rodriguez but advantage is played. About 30 seconds later, those in yellow still on the ball, Rodriguez reappears on the edge of the box and fires on target. Costa saves.

Portugal go right up the other end and a cross from the right almost finds Ronaldo.

Then Colombia go straight back on the attack and, really, it’s like basketball. This is incredible.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:17 , Alan Smith

45’ - Puerta could take his time on the edge of the box but hurries a shot into the hands of Costa after Jhon Arias laid it off.

We’ll have three added minutes but we do not want it to stop.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:14 , Alan Smith

44’ - Rodriguez and Lerma have pot shots. Veiga blocks both.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:13 , Alan Smith

42’ - Now it’s Felix who goes close. He chests the ball forward following a throw in from Mendes and , at full stretch, sends a right-footed half volley about a yard over. What a momentum shift in the past few minutes.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:12 , Alan Smith

40’ - Just as we question Portugal’s lack of attacking impact... Vargas has produced a stunning stop to deny Fernandes from about eight yards. The Colombia keeper raises his right hand and it’s a strong one to deny the Manchester United star.

A few moments later Neves takes a shot from range. He thinks it takes a deflection when swerving wide. Replays show that it does but a goal kick is given and Neves’ protest earns him a yellow card.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:09 , Alan Smith

38’ - Portugal have taken the sting out of Colombia slightly - though they are yet to really get going in attack save for a couple of breaks. Ronaldo is more in Congo mode than Uzbekistan mode so far.

Cancelo wastes a decent chance to find the main man, sending a cross straight out for a goal kick.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:04 , Alan Smith

33’ - Rodriguez is down briefly after Dias smashes into the back of him. It’s sore but he will be fine to continue.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:03 , Alan Smith

31’ - Colombia should have a corner but a goal kick is awarded. Veiga certainly had the touch and that is an error from the officials which VAR cannot correct because the new rule only applies when corners are mistakenly given and can be reversed.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

01:00 , Alan Smith

28’ - Back underway with Colombia back on the ball.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:55 , Alan Smith

Time for the break. For once, it is needed.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:55 , Alan Smith

24’ - Ronaldo kicks the free kick straight at Vargas. It was too far out to really threaten.

 (Reuters)

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:53 , Alan Smith

23’ - Ronaldo wins a free kick about 35 yards out having been tripped by Jhon Arias.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:53 , Alan Smith

22’ - Now Jhon Arias, fed by Rodriguez, tries to find the bottom left corner. Neves clears from a yard out.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:52 , Alan Smith

20’ - Fernandes tires to set Felix away but Santiago Arias does well to track the run and make it difficult.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:48 , Alan Smith

17’ - Great save Costa! This one is from Cordoba, who charges forward at pace before firing off his right boot. The Portugal goalkeeper’s stop is excellent. From the rebound Diaz’s attempt is stopped by Cancelo. This is 100mph stuff from Colombia.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:45 , Alan Smith

14’ - Puerta sees a gap open in front of him about 25 yards out but, off balance, he smashes high and wide. It’s another chance, though, for the team that has started far better in Miami.

Goal! DR Congo 0-1 Uzbekistan (Shomurodov)

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:43 , Alan Smith

Eldor Shomurodov has scored in the other game with a delightful lob from an acute angle - and if it stays this way England would play Senegal on Wednesday.

 (Reuters)

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:42 , Alan Smith

10’ - Colombia are playing some really nice stuff here. Their passing is crisp, the moment lively. And Portugal are yet to really get into the flow of things.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:39 , Alan Smith

8’ - Rodriguez fires a low, firm shot across goal and wide.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:38 , Alan Smith

6’ - Santiago Arias flings in a long throw that Veiga heads away uncertainly.

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:35 , Alan Smith

4’ - Ruben Neves sends a wild volley harmlessly wide as the game shows little sign of settling from a frantic start.

 (Reuters)

Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:33 , Alan Smith

1’ - A good chance for Colombia already. Diaz is already making an impact, sending a cross in from the left for Cordoba to meet with a header that he directs a few inches over.

Kick-off! Colombia 0-0 Portugal

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:31 , Alan Smith

1’ - Colombia get us underway. This should be fun.

Moment of silence

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:31 , Alan Smith

There are some murmurings the moment of silence, met with plenty of boos afterwards, as the majority pay their respects to those who have passed in the tragedy in Venezuela.

Kick off nears...

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Right, we should soon have action in Miami. There looks to be plenty of support for both teams in, and Colombia particularly, with those fans certain to be staying for another game at least. Where will they be? Kick off is imminent.

Portugal in must-win mode

Sunday 28 June 2026 00:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez appears to be embracing the simplicity of the stakes for his side tonight.

“Sometimes you go into a third game where drawing or winning could give you one path or another, but here it’s very simple – we have to win to try to finish top,” he said.

“Colombia have won two games already, so for us it’s a very straightforward approach to the game.

“Colombia, with a draw, are top of the group, so I’m sure that their approach can be different managing the game, but for us it’s a really good opportunity to start well, manage the game well and finish strong.”

Colombia wary of Vitinha and Cristiano Ronaldo

Saturday 27 June 2026 23:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo said his team would need to be especially tactically disciplined in their World Cup Group K decider against Portugal to deal with the threats posed by Vitinha and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Colombians need to avoid defeat to advance as group winners but Lorenzo was taking nothing for granted against a team he considers one of the favourites to win the World Cup.

"We'll try to maintain our style and our footballing identity," he told reporters on Friday. "But without a doubt, we have to pay attention to `the other characteristics and strengths (Portugal) has. It's a very well-coached team. They have a coach and players who are at the elite level of world football ... and that `shows in their game.

“Both Vitinha and Ronaldo are decisive players. One in the organisation of the game and the quality of his playmaking, and the other in finishing. So we absolutely cannot leave them alone or ‌neglect them. Hopefully the team collective will be well-oiled."I think we need special tactical discipline tomorrow in order to counter both the way Vitinha starts and drives the team's play, and the finishing ability of Ronaldo, which requires special attention."

What do DR Congo need to qualify?

Saturday 27 June 2026 22:50 , Will Castle

DR Congo are currently on one point and will know a win against Uzbekistan is a must if they want to progress. Doing so will take them to four points which will be enough for them to go through in third.

A significant win could even see them leapfrog Portugal into second if the Selecao lose to Colombia. The primary focus, though, is victory by any margin.

What do Portugal need to qualify?

Saturday 27 June 2026 22:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Portugal are already home and dry as far as their knockouts progression is concern - they sit on four points which will be enough for them to go through as one of the eight-best third-placed teams, at the very least.

A win will see Portugal leapfrog already-qualified Colombia into first, while a draw would be enough to secure a runners-up finish.
