Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav on Wednesday paid tribute to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 62nd death anniversary and accused the BJP of undermining institutions established under Nehru’s vision for political gains.

Yadav, along with Congress leaders and workers, offered floral tributes to Nehru at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan, and paid homage at Shanti Van near Raj Ghat earlier in the day.

Speaking at the event, Yadav described Nehru as the “architect of modern India” and said his visionary planning and scientific temperament laid the foundation for India’s emergence as a major modern power.

He said after Independence, Nehru focused on building educational, scientific, technical, medical and industrial institutions to make the country strong and self-reliant.

Referring to institutions established during Nehru’s tenure, Yadav cited All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), along with major infrastructure projects such as the Bhakra Nangal Dam and Bokaro and Rourkela steel plants, as examples of Nehru’s development-oriented vision.

The Delhi Congress chief alleged that instead of strengthening these institutions, the BJP government was attempting to weaken them for “cheap political gains”.

“Due to the BJP’s retrograde policies, the country is on a ruinous path, as the agenda of the Modi government is to oppose the Nehruvian model of development,” Yadav said.

Several Congress leaders, including AICC Delhi in-charge Qazi Nizamuddin, Delhi Mahila Congress president Pushpa Singh and other party workers, attended the programme at Rajiv Bhawan.
