Efforts to bridge factional divides within the Congress appear to have gained momentum after senior party leader Rahul Gandhi participated in the statewide “Sadbhav Yatra” being led by former MP Brijendra Singh.

Addressing the media at the residence of former minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav in Rewari, Brijendra said the yatra had received an overwhelming response and had been appreciated by Rahul Gandhi.

Responding to a question regarding the programme’s conclusion, Brijendra said the yatra would culminate in Rohtak, the political stronghold of Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Hooda, and that Hooda would be invited to attend the event.

“We are yet to cover five Assembly constituencies, including Pataudi, Badli, Beri, Garhi Sampla-Kiloi and Rohtak, following which the yatra would culminate at Rohtak,” said the former MP.

Factionalism within the state Congress has become visible during the yatra, with leaders from certain groups actively participating while others have stayed away from the programme. Before Rahul Gandhi joined the yatra, Hooda had reportedly described it as a private programme. Against this backdrop, Brijendra’s statement about concluding the yatra in Rohtak and inviting Hooda assumes significance.

“The yatra is being taken out to strengthen the Congress and connect with the residents of the state. It has been acknowledged by our leader Rahul Gandhi. Hence, all leaders of the party should participate in it,” said Yadav.

Reacting to PM Narendra Modi’s appeal urging citizens to avoid purchasing gold and foreign travel, he said the PM should practise what he preaches. “The PM is telling people to avoid going abroad, while he is scheduled to go on a foreign tour on May 15. Whenever the nation faces any crisis, the PM and the government should first implement such measures upon themselves before expecting sacrifice and cooperation from people,” he said.

“The people are always ready to make sacrifices in the national interest, but the government should also understand the struggle and sufferings of the common citizens,” he maintained.

Yadav also expressed apprehension that the PM’s remarks could be aimed at preparing the public for a possible hike in petrol and diesel prices. He further said that instead of merely delivering speeches, the BJP government should lead by example.

“Before repeatedly asking the public to sacrifice, the government should first reduce its own expenditures and curtail extravagant programmes,” he stated.
