PETALING JAYA: The hawker who used a racial slur against the Indian community in a controversial signboard was slapped with a RM400 fine by the Sepang magistrates’ court today.

According to Sepang deputy police chief Shan Gopal Krishnan, the 64-year-old hawker pleaded guilty to a charge of making statements contributing to public mischief under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code.

AdvertisementThe offence is punishable by up to two years in prison, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Kosmo reported that the man’s wife, a 52-year-old Indonesian, was sentenced by the same court to three months in jail after pleading guilty to overstaying in Malaysia.

Previously, the hawker had apologised over the signboard in the presence of representatives from the Indian community, social media influencers, local residents, officials from the national unity and integration department, and police.
