Europeans already use national digital systems or private-company apps, like Apple or Google Wallet, to store boarding passes or access social security benefits. The EU wants to simplify citizens’ administrative tasks with an EU-wide digital space usable across borders.
The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is a personal digital platform that allows citizens and businesses to store private data in one place, without relying on third parties or a patchwork of national systems.
In the Wallet, users can store and share digital documents, including diplomas, rental history, driving licences, and medical prescriptions. They can access public and private services, such as social security or applying for bank loans, and sign documents digitally.
Users remain in control of their personal data thanks to the “selective disclosure” feature. When accessing services, they decide what information to share. All digital documents will remain private, as will the transactions made through the Wallet.
Two large-scale pilot projects are currently testing the Wallet ahead of national rollout. They bring together public authorities, private companies, and technology providers to design, implement, and make the Wallet operational and safe.
Instead of a single EU-wide Wallet app, member states will create their own national versions. These must have the same technical standards so users can use them anywhere in the EU at any time. The wallets must be available for download on personal mobile devices by the end of 2026.
