PETALING JAYA: A couple who pleaded guilty to neglecting their seven-day-old baby boy last week changed their plea in the Chukai sessions court to not guilty today.

Bernama reported that Nur Aisyah Azila Zairul Akmal, 21, and Alhafiz Mukminin Noor, 24, claimed trial to the charge before judge Wan Suhaila Mohd.

Wan Suhaila set July 31 for mention for the submission of documents and the results of the DNA test.

Deputy public prosecutor Syairah Razali appeared for the prosecution while the accused were represented by lawyer Nurul Farhana Shamsudin from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

Read more Last Thursday, the couple pleaded guilty to a joint charge of neglecting the infant in a manner likely to cause physical injury.

The offence was allegedly committed at a shop in Jalan Air Putih, Chukai, Terengganu between 7am and 7.15am on May 18.

The charge was framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child neglect, punishable under Section 31(1) of the same law, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment not exceeding 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

The court allowed them bail of RM2,000 with one surety each and set today for sentencing.
