Marriott International and Iconic Group have signed an agreement to introduce Courtyard by Marriott Penang Icon City, marking the brand’s debut on Penang Mainland and strengthening Marriott’s growing presence in Malaysia.
Expected to open in December 2026, the property will be created through the rebranding of the existing Iconic Hotel Penang, located within the four-hectare Icon City mixed-use development in Bukit Mertajam.
The 196-room hotel is positioned to cater to both business and leisure travellers, benefiting from its proximity to major industrial and commercial hubs including the Prai Free Industrial Zone, Penang Science Park, Batu Kawan Industrial Park and Kulim Hi-Tech Park. Convenient access to the North-South Expressway and Penang International Airport is also expected to support corporate and MICE travel to the region.
Enhanced Hospitality
The transformation will be carried out in phases, beginning with upgrades to guestrooms, public areas, restaurants and recreational facilities. Expanded wellness amenities will also be introduced as part of the refurbishment.
Once completed, the hotel is expected to feature an all-day dining restaurant, café and bar, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre, sauna and steam rooms. Business travellers and event organisers will also have access to a 640-square-metre divisible ballroom and two additional meeting rooms designed for conferences, corporate functions and social events.
The signing builds on Marriott International’s existing partnership with Iconic Group, following the launch of Iconic Marjorie Penang, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. It also reflects Marriott’s strategy of expanding its portfolio across key destinations in Malaysia, aligning its brands with growing demand from both domestic and international travellers.
Part of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio, Courtyard by Marriott is designed for modern travellers seeking a balance of productivity and relaxation, offering contemporary accommodation, flexible workspaces and lifestyle-focused facilities. The addition of the brand to Penang Mainland further strengthens the area’s hospitality offering as it continues to develop as a commercial and business destination.
