Czechia rises from two down to beat Dominicans

MANILA, Philippines — CZECHIA came up with a strong finish in the Pasig City leg of the Women’s Volleyball Nations League, defeating the Dominican Republic, 17-25, 24-26, 25-18, 31-29, 15-10, on Sunday at the Philsports Arena.

Monika Brancuska scored 28 on 23 attacks, three blocks and two aces as the Czechs ended a three-match losing streak in the event presented by the Philippine Sports Commission.

Magdalena Jehlarova and Michaela Mlejnkova scored 14 each as Czechia notched their fourth win in eight matches, raising their total to 11 points and boosting their bid for a spot in the final in Macau.

The top eight from the elite 18-team field advance to the finale.

Czechia looks to fortify its bid when it sees action in Pool Seven in Belgrade, Serbia in Week Three.

Flormarie Heredia had 17 points to lead the Dominican Republic, which ended with a 1-3 record in the Pasig leg.

Jineiry Martinez, Yonkaira Paola Pena Ysabel and Geraldine Sthefany Gonzalez had 15 each for the Dominicans, now with a 1-7 record with five points.

The Dominicans play Week Three in Hong Kong with Pool Eight.
