KUALA LUMPUR - The public will have the chance to catch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final live on a giant screen at Dataran Merdeka in the early hours of Monday (20th) morning.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the screening is one of the highlights of the "Unity Merdeka" programme, which kicked off yesterday and runs until Sunday. The event is organised by the Kuala Lumpur police in collaboration with 16 ministries.
He added that the programme aims to foster a stronger sense of unity among Malaysia's multi-ethnic communities. A host of activities will begin at 8 pm tomorrow, building up to the much-anticipated final match screening.
"We'll be setting up a massive screen at Dataran Merdeka, and we're hoping to draw a crowd of up to 300,000 people to come and watch the game together.
"We're encouraging the public to fill up Dataran Merdeka, which we hope will also earn the programme a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records," he told reporters after the Fun Run Unity Merdeka event at Dataran Merdeka today.
Earlier, some 2,000 participants took part in the five-kilometre run, which was designed to strengthen ties between the police force and the community in the capital.
The run also saw Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief DCP Datuk Mohd Azani Omar among the participants, alongside 16 members of the Crime Journalists Association.
Held under the theme Diversity United, Wellbeing Preserved, the Unity Merdeka programme brings together a rich mix of elements, from welfare and arts to education, religion, family activities, and entertainment, all open to visitors of all ages.
Other crowd-pullers include exhibitions and interactive booths set up by various security and government agencies, such as the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Armed Forces, Fire and Rescue Department and Ministry of Health. - BERNAMA
