
A garment businessman in Ludhiana died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house. He was under debt which allegedly drove him to take the step. The incident came to light when he failed to pick-up his daughter from her tuition centre.
According to the police, the deceased, Sunny Kumar Chawla, owned a ready-made clothing showroom, One Day Collection, at Baba Than Singh Chowk.
SHO, Jamalpur police station, SI Dalveer Singh, said the deceased was 45 years old. He had been in distress for the past three to four months. His business was also not doing well. The victim’s family has not filed any complaint against anyone.
The deceased’s brother, Brijmohan Chawla, said Sunny had dropped his 14-year-old daughter at the tuition centre around 4 pm on Thursday. He was supposed to pick her up at 6 pm but when he did not arrive, she called him. Sunny did not answer the call. Sunny’s wife then called neighbours and asked them to check in the house. When they reach his house, they found the main door open and Sunny’s body hanging from the fan with a scarf.
According to family members, Sunny owed lakhs of rupees to some people. The creditors were constantly pressuring him to repay the money. The deceased’s wife knows the names and details of them. The man was survived by his wife and the minor daughter. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.
ASI Gurmeet Singh said the police had received information that a man had hanged himself. Initial investigations revealed that he took the step due to financial problems. The deceased had no underlying medical conditions or drug addiction and there was no family conflict. Appropriate legal action will be taken based on statements recorded by the his wife and other family members.
