In recent years, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Malaysia has faced accusations of being anti-monarchy due to its policy of not accepting titles bestowed by the royal institution.

These allegations have persisted, despite DAP leaders not rejecting such honours upon retiring from politics.

However, it is crucial to dissect this issue and understand that DAP's stance on titles is not synonymous with being anti-monarchy.

DAP's Secretary-General, Anthony Loke, has come forward to clarify the party's position. He emphasised that the policy of not accepting titles has been grossly misinterpreted as being against the monarchy.

In truth, DAP does not oppose royalty; their decision not to accept titles is based on a different principle.

Loke urged all political parties in Malaysia to refrain from practicing extremist politics that manipulate religious and racial sentiments, which can potentially divide the multicultural society.

DAP's concern is not directed towards any specific race or religion but rather the manipulation of these sentiments by unscrupulous parties for political gain. This is a matter that impacts the harmony of the nation.

In Malaysia, where diversity is a defining feature, it is essential to preserve peace and harmony.

Labelling individuals as "infidels" in Parliament, as Loke pointed out, is not only uncalled for but also threatens this harmony. Such divisive rhetoric should not have a place in the political discourse of a nation that prides itself on its multiculturalism.

DAP's policy of not accepting titles may be unconventional, but it should not be equated with being anti-monarchy.

Instead, it's a principled stand that reflects the party's commitment to a fair, just, and harmonious Malaysia.

In conclusion, it is imperative to separate fact from fiction when discussing the DAP's stance on royal titles. Their policy does not signify an anti-monarchy stance but rather a commitment to a Malaysia that upholds the values of diversity, harmony, and principled politics.

Perhaps other parties too should encourage members to accept titles only after retirement as a recognition of their service to the country rather than an entitlement for holding a political post.

To create a better and more united nation, we must also challenge the misconceptions and divisive narratives that have plagued Malaysian politics for far too long.
