A court here on Saturday sentenced a man convicted of raping his sister-in-law to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, police said.

The court of Faridabad’s additional sessions judge Purushottam Kumar also fined the convict Rs 1 lakh.

According to the police, the victim, who lived with her husband in a rented house in Faridabad, filed a complaint in 2022.

The complaint stated that while her in-laws lived in Delhi, her brother-in-law was a regular visitor to their home in Faridabad.

In January 2021, the convict called the woman’s husband to Delhi on the pretext of some work. Shortly after the husband left the house, the convict arrived at the woman’s home and raped her. The victim later told her husband about the rape.

According to the police, the family members tried to hush up the matter and forced her into a compromise. She filed a police complaint only one and a half years later.

Legal aid lawyer Ravindra Gupta said there were 16 witnesses in the trial.
