THE Women’s Legal Aid Centre (WLAC) of the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department (Jhewa) handled 46 cases related to family and persecution from the perspective of syariah, civil and customs in the first six months this year, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said based on the latest statistics from January to June 2022, 40 cases were handled in Kota Kinabalu, four in Kota Belud and two in Sandakan.

“It is hoped that through the efforts of Jhewa, more women, in particular in critical and long pending court cases, can be helped.

“Legal aid services by Jhewa are especially for women who need legal assistance and defence, and women need to know the functions of the services provided,” he said when officiating the “Sabah Roadshow” programme at Dewan Seri Sulaman in Tuaran on Aug 20.

The programme was organised by the Sabah Women’s Advisory Council (MPWS) and Jhewa in collaboration with the District Office, Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Social Security Organisation (Socso) and Credit Counselling and Management Agency (AKPK).

Tuaran district was the fifth destination of the implementation of the “Sabah Roadshow” programme, which started last July, after Ranau, Tawau, Lahad Datu and Putatan.

The programme will continue in several other districts.

Hajiji said the programme is very meaningful for the people to learn more about the products and services provided by MPWS, Jhewa, EPF, Socso and AKPK related to legal aid, employer’s responsibility and employee’s rights, and solving financial problems.

“The State Government is committed to supporting the implementation of this programme because it also helps the Government’s efforts to provide more useful information to the people.

“I hope that programmes like this will continue to receive support from the people to know more about the products or services offered throughout the programmes by the agencies involved.

“I also hope that all the information and sharing that has been delivered by the agencies today will provide useful benefits to the programme participants and that all the knowledge gained will be shared with relatives and close friends,” he added.
