The German Football Federation (DFB) will decide on the future of Julian Nagelsmann after the return from the World Cup amid criticism on the national team coach and calls for Jürgen Klopp to take over.

Four-time champions Germany were ousted 4-3 on penalties by Paraguay in the round of 32 on Monday, a result only marginally better than group stage exits in 2018 and 2022.

DFB president Neuendorf said in a statement on Tuesday that he had talks with Nagelsmann, managing director Andreas Rettig and sporting director Rudi Völler after the match and that "we all agree that our performance at the World Cup did not meet our expectations."

But he said the DFB won't rush to a decision on the future of Nagelsmann, who has a contract until 2028 and said post-match he would not step down and wanted to continue if allowed to.

"Over the coming days, we will calmly and collectively examine the reasons why the team was unable to realize its potential and fell short of both its own expectations and those of football-loving Germany," Neuendorf said.

"After such a severe setback, and with the challenges ahead, we cannot and will not simply carry on as if nothing happened.

"We would like to thank all the fans who supported us so wonderfully in the United States and Canada, as well as back home. We are all very disappointed that our journey together has come to an end so early."

The German delegation was set to leave the United States later Tuesday, with players to travel individually.

Nagelsmann was bullish after the defeat, telling broadcasters ZDF in a frractious interview: "I'm available if the DFB wants it, I have a deal until 2028. If not, then they have to tell me. I am not the sort of person who runs away."

Völler said post-match he was "still convinced that he's the right man for the job, the right person in the right place.

"When you're eliminated like this, many people won't understand it. I still think he's an absolutely top-class coach," he said, while adding that it wasn't up to him alone to decide.

After Germany's previous group-stage eliminations 2014 World Cup-winning coach Joachim Löw and 2022 under Hansi Flick were both kept in 2018 and 2022, respectively.

Former Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich coach Nagelsmann has been on the job since 2023. He reached the quarter-finals at the Euro 2024 home event and the 2025 Nations League finals.

A number of former German World Cup winning pundits ranging from Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann to Christoph Kramer and Mats Hummels called for consequences in every area.

The Bild paper bluntly said that "now Klopp must come" and wasn't alone in the call for the the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool coach to take over.

But Klopp, who is now head of Red Bull's global football operations and at the World Cup as a MagentaTV pundit, would not comment.

"I understand that my name is brought into play. But it is not the right moment to talk about it," Klopp said.

Klopp has long been seen as a top candidate for the national team job. He led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup while at Liverpool he won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Germany's first match after the World Cup is a September 24 Nations League match against the Netherlands, who were also eliminated from the World Cup on Monday, by Morocco. Greece and Serbia are the other teams in the group.
