KUALA LUMPUR - Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay has described the dissolution of the Bukit Aman Special Branch's Counter Terrorism Division in February 2013 as one of the most disappointing moments of his nearly 35-year career in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

He stated that the dissolution of the division meant capabilities built since 2009 could no longer be sustained; and that he still harbors disappointment over that decision.

"Throughout my career, the thing that left me most deeply regretful was the dissolution of the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division in February 2013.

"We built that team from 2009 to 2013. When it was dissolved, I was truly deeply disappointed," he said during a press conference after the Deputy Inspector-General of Police handover ceremony at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL) in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Addressing the issue of integrity within the police force, Ayob Khan stressed that leadership must take firm action against any officers or personnel involved in corruption, abuse of power or criminal activities, regardless of rank.

"If we are not firm, we are actually shielding that misconduct until it eventually becomes a culture.

"Do not compromise. If anyone commits a wrongdoing, take action. Never mind the rank. If corruption is considered a culture, this force will be ruined," he said.

He also emphasised that top leadership must lead by example, as firmness from the upper echelons will influence the working culture across all levels of the organisation. - AWANI
