Anwar Ibrahim's first year in office has witnessed a significant erosion of public support, as indicated by the Merdeka Centre's recent survey.
The doubling of dissatisfaction from 19% to 43% is alarming, reflecting a growing discontent among Malaysians with Anwar's leadership.
The survey's revelation of a 68% to 50% slump in satisfaction over the same period underscores a clear loss of confidence in the Anwar-led Madani Government. Interestingly, the deadlock in overall sentiment, with 41% expressing equal levels of satisfaction and dissatisfaction, indicates a polarized public opinion.
A noteworthy trend is the government's struggle to resonate with Malays, constituting 60% of those dissatisfied. The discontent extends to the Indian community at 52%, while the Chinese community shows a comparatively lower dissatisfaction at 30%. This ethnic divide raises questions about the government's ability to address the diverse needs of the population.
Equally concerning is the socioeconomic breakdown of dissatisfaction, with 56% of those earning less than RM2,000 a month expressing frustration. This suggests that Anwar's promises to uplift the poor have not materialized effectively. The dissatisfaction levels persist across income brackets, indicating a broad-based discontent that transcends economic strata.
The survey methodology, involving 1,220 respondents across diverse demographics and regions, lends credibility to the findings. The random stratified sampling method ensures a representative cross-section of opinions, encompassing the nuances of ethnicity, gender, age, and geographical location.
As Malaysia assesses Anwar's first year in office, the survey results signal a pressing need for the government to address the identified concerns.
Bridging ethnic and socioeconomic gaps, fulfilling promises, and actively engaging with the dissatisfied segments of the population will be crucial for the Anwar administration to regain public trust and steer the country toward a more united and prosperous future.
