DOLE cancels work permits of 6 foreigners linked to steel plant

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) canceled the Alien Employment Permits of six people linked to Chuangxing Steel Incorporated after a raid on the firm's steel plant in Magalang, Pampanga.

The department also sent their records to the Bureau of Immigration for deportation proceedings.

The DOLE said in a statement that its thorough investigation "revealed that the company failed to present basic employment records and neglected to pay employees their proper overtime and holiday wages." The department added that "the firm failed to provide mandatory worker benefits...and failed to present a Workplace Sexual Harassment Policy or establish a Committee on Decorum and Investigation."

Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino directed an entity to fully cooperate with DOLE Regional Office 3 and resolve what the department said were "non-compliance issues, particularly those concerning unpaid or improperly calculated wages and mandatory employee benefits."

The work stoppage order against the facility remained active, the DOLE said.
