DOLE fines former Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin P4.9M over work permit violations

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Tuesday found former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin administratively liable for violations involving his Alien Employment Permit (AEP) and Certificate of Exemption.

DOLE ordered Baldwin to pay P4.9 million for his failure to secure the required Certificate of Exemption covering the period from Feb. 10, 2025, to June 15, 2026, when he resigned from Ateneo.

Baldwin was also ordered to pay a P10,000 fine for failure to secure an AEP during his employment with Ateneo from Dec. 1, 2015, to Sept. 28, 2016.

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) was likewise ordered to pay P10,000 for employing Baldwin without a valid AEP during the same period.

Both the university and Baldwin were also held jointly and severally liable for the P4.9 million administrative fine arising from the failure to secure the required Certificate of Exemption.

The labor department also referred the case to the Bureau of Immigration for summary deportation proceedings, without prejudice to any civil, administrative or criminal complaints pending before investigative agencies or the courts.

Meanwhile, Baldwin’s camp had maintained that his permanent resident status exempted him from securing an AEP. DOLE, however, ruled that he was required to secure the necessary employment documents.
