Doncic fires 52 points in Lakers’ win over Jazz

SALT LAKE CITY — Luka Doncic scored 52 points, hitting eight 3-pointers, to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 132-123 victory over the Utah Jazz on Sunday (Monday in Manila).

In the first 50-point game this season in the NBA, Doncic made several big baskets late in the fourth quarter to help the Lakers win for the eighth time in their last nine games against Utah. He finished off a 14-5 go-ahead run with back-to-back 3s that gave Los Angeles a 127-121 lead with 1:42 left.

Doncic also had 10 assists and seven rebounds. Austin Reaves added 29 points for the Lakers. The pair combined to shoot 21 of 24 on free throws.

Walker Kessler had only two points and seven rebounds in his first game back in Utah after being sent to Los Angeles in a sign-and-trade deal in July.

Lauri Markkanen scored 28 points to lead the Jazz, who blew an 18-point second-quarter lead.

Keyonte George had 24 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists for the Jazz. Jaren Jackson Jr. added 20 points while Ace Bailey chipped in 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Doncic hit a stepback 3-pointer with 4.1 seconds left in the half to give the Lakers their first lead at 74-71.

In Oklahoma City, Shai-Gilgeous Alexander scored 34 points, Ajay Mitchell had 18 off the bench and the Oklahoma City Thunder stayed undefeated with a 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Isaiah Hartenstein added 12 points and 12 rebounds for Oklahoma City, which won its third straight to start the season but lost three players to injury, including All-Star guard Jalen Williams, who went down hard on a drive to the basket with 1:14 left. Williams left the court on a stretcher with towels covering his left leg.

Guard Cason Wallace (left shoulder soreness) and forward Jaylin Williams (right wrist soreness) left the game in the first quarter and did not return. Mitchell was 8-of-14 shooting with six rebounds, four assists and three steals in 27 minutes.

Darius Garland scored 16 points for Los Angeles (1-2). Kris Dunn and Brook Lopez had 15 points each for the Clippers.

In New York, Franz Wagner scored 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, and the Orlando Magic dropped the reigning champion New York Knicks to 0-3 with a 111-102 win.

Wagner, who started 1 of 10 from the field, added 13 rebounds and nine assists, and Anthony Black had 18 points and five assists after missing Orlando’s first two games with an ankle injury.

The Magic, already playing without leading scorer Paolo Banchero, lost Jalen Suggs to a knee injury in the fourth quarter but outscored the Knicks 40-27 in the period to earn their first win under Sean Sweeney.

Jalen Brunson scored 28 points for the Knicks. Karl-Anthony Towns had 22 points and 14 rebounds and OG Anunoby added 22 points, but the Knicks became the first defending champion to start 0-3 since the 2011-12 Dallas Mavericks.

The Magic trailed 12-0 but hung tough by shooting 43 percent from 3-point range. Tristan Da Silva and Black both made five 3s and Desmond Bane was 4 of 9.
