DPWH to start C-5 rehabilitation in late November

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will begin rehabilitating a 23-kilometer stretch of C5 Road from Kalayaan Interchange to Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City in the last week of November, Secretary Giovanni Lopez said on Tuesday.

Lopez said the project will follow the model of the ongoing EDSA rehabilitation, including wider sidewalks to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.

The project will undergo post-qualification of bids while the notice of award could be issued on Nov. 18, followed by a notice to proceed a week later, the DPWH chief said.

He said the rehabilitation will address the deteriorating condition of C5 Road, where sections have developed potholes and uneven surfaces.

The funding for the C5 project will come partly from savings generated by the EDSA rehabilitation, whose original budget of about P15 billion to P17 billion was reduced to P6 billion under the supervision of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, who previously headed the DPWH.

The government aims to complete improvements to both major thoroughfares during the term of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Lopez said.

Meanwhile, the DPWH reopened the northbound and southbound lanes of the C5 flyovers in Pasig ahead of schedule following retrofitting work.

Lopez said the northbound lane of the Boni Serrano flyover was reopened at 3 p.m. on Monday, while the Pasig Boulevard flyover's northbound lane reopened at noon and its southbound lane at midnight.

The early reopening was intended to ease traffic for motorists returning from the provinces and those heading to work on Tuesday, he.

Lopez credited Dizon for helping monitor the projects, including the work of DPWH regional directors and district engineers, to ensure their timely completion.
