The Democratic Republic of Congo announced the death of coach Sébastien Desabre's father during a news conference after a defeat to England ended their participation at the World Cup.
"We would like to inform you that the coach has lost his father. Our condolences," the team's press officer said at the end of the news conference.
Desabre, who was sitting next to the press officer, seemed taken a back for a moment and then offered a brief "thank you" and left.
Further details were not disclosed. It's unclear whether Desabre had been previously informed about the death of his father or if he was hearing the news for the first time.
DR Congo made their World Cup debut at this year's tournament and booked a historic spot in the knock-out stage. Their participation, however, ended after a 2-1 defeat to England in the round of 32.
