KUALA LUMPUR – Dr Helmy Haja Mydin has been appointed as the new chairman of Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM), replacing Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz.
His appointment by Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Taufiq Johari takes effect from March 31.
Helmy’s appointment comes at a crucial juncture for the corporation, which manages key national venues including the Telekom Malaysia National Stadium, as Malaysia ramps up preparations for the 2027 SEA Games while addressing longstanding concerns over facility management and maintenance.
Speaking to Scoop, Helmy expressed gratitude for the opportunity while acknowledging the scale of responsibility ahead.
“I thank the minister (Taufiq) for his trust in appointing me as chairman of PSM.
“While I am honoured by this privilege, I am under no illusion regarding the responsibilities that come with the job.”
He stressed that his immediate priority would be ensuring all venues under the corporation are fully prepared for the regional showpiece.
“First and foremost – to ensure that all PSM assets to be used for next year’s SEA Games in Malaysia are up to par so that we can host a Games that the rakyat can be proud of,” he said.
Beyond infrastructure readiness, Helmy highlighted the importance of strengthening the corporation’s commercial outlook by maximising the potential of its venues.
“PSM is also a commercial entity and I intend to assist and empower PSM’s management, capitalising on the world-class facilities that we have by making PSM venues a primary destination for global tournaments and events. If done well, this will enable us to achieve the long-term goal of self-sufficiency.”

He also underscored governance reform as a key pillar of his leadership approach.
“Finally, I will review existing operational and procurement processes alongside my board members to ensure that the highest levels of corporate governance is upheld. This is in keeping with the Madani administration’s emphasis on integrity and good governance.”
Helmy is actively involved in shaping national health policies.
A respiratory specialist by training, he heads the Lung Centre at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and has been actively involved in shaping national policies, including serving as a technical and special adviser to past health ministers on tobacco control and broader public health issues.
He is also chairman of PERKESO Rehabilitation Sdn Bhd, and the co-founder and chairman of the Social & Economic Research Initiative (SERI), a think tank focused on evidence-based policymaking. He also holds board roles in organisations the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Medical Device Authority, reflecting his experience in governance, regulation and digital policy.
His predecessor, Anita Azrina, made history as the first woman to helm the corporation in 2025, overseeing a term focused on facility upgrades, improving commercial sustainability and strengthening operational structures within the organisation.
PSM plays a central role in the country’s sporting ecosystem, overseeing major venues used by national associations across football, badminton and hockey, while also driving revenue through concerts and large-scale events.
With Malaysia gearing up to host the 2027 SEA Games, Helmy is expected to play a key role in ensuring infrastructure readiness, enhancing operational efficiency and steering the corporation towards greater financial sustainability and governance standards in the years ahead. - April 16, 2026
