TAWAU: A 43-year-old woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a four-wheel drive vehicle allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver during her evening jog on Saturday.

The accident happened around 9.10pm at Mile 9, Jalan Apas, as the victim was jogging with friends from Bandar Sri Indah (Mile 10) toward the T2 area at Mile 2, Jalan Apas.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the victim remains in critical condition at the Tawau Hospital as of Sunday.

Police investigations revealed that the vehicle first collided with an MPV driven by a 39-year-old man traveling from Taman Ria 11 to Tawau Airport.

The impact caused the 4WD driver to lose control, veering onto the left shoulder where he crashed into the jogger.

Police have arrested the 4WD driver under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

If convicted, he faces seven to 10 years imprisonment, fines between RM50, 000 and RM100, 000, and a 10-year driving license suspension.

Jasmin urged the public to avoid night time jogging on roads due to limited visibility and fast-moving traffic, recommending well-lit jogging tracks or safe areas instead to prevent such tragedies.
