Duo fined over brawl in Ranau

RANAU: Two men were fined by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to a charge of affray arising from a fight inside a grocery store in Kampung Matupang earlier this year.

Augustine Sikun, 35, was fined RM1,600, in default six months’ imprisonment, while Dirol William, 19, was fined RM1,000, in default six months’ imprisonment, after both admitted to the offence before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin.

The duo were charged under Section 160 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to six months, a fine, or both, for committing affray in a public place.

According to the facts of the case, the incident occurred at about 6pm on May 19, 2026, at Kinabalu Maju Jaya Enterprise Sdn Bhd in Kampung Matupang, Ranau.

The court heard that Dirol was purchasing household necessities at the grocery store when he encountered Augustine. A verbal altercation subsequently broke out between them before the confrontation turned physical.

Dirol was found to have kicked Augustine, who retaliated by punching Dirol in the face. The fight continued inside the premises for about five minutes before ending, with both men sustaining injuries.

Following police investigations, both were charged with committing affray in a public place under Section 160 of the Penal Code.

The incident had previously attracted public attention after a video of the altercation circulated widely on social media.

After considering their guilty pleas, the court imposed separate fines on both accused, with Augustine receiving a higher fine of RM1,600 while Dirol was fined RM800, reflecting their respective roles and the circumstances of the offence.

Section 160 of the Penal Code makes it an offence for two or more persons to fight in a public place in a manner that disturbs public peace, regardless of who initiated the confrontation.
