Duterte-linked firm's transcations scrutinized in impeachment trial

MANILA, Philippines — Cale88 Food Corp., a business linked to Vice President Sara Duterte, recorded P40,138,766.28 in inflows and P40,001,101.79 in outflows in 2024 through its two peso accounts with Security Bank, its branch manager Leslie Cham told the Senate impeachment court on Wednesday.

The figures were disclosed after Senator-judge Raffy Tulfo asked Cham to clarify an apparent discrepancy between Cale88’s P332,530.95 ending balance in 2024 and a forensic report showing about P40.14 million in transactions for the same year.

Cham initially told the court that Cale88’s 2024 ending balance was P332,530.95.

Tulfo pointed out that a forensic report cited a figure of about P40.14 million for 2024.

Cham explained that the P332,530.95 figure was the account’s ending balance, not the total amount that moved through the account during the year.

When Tulfo asked whether the P40.14 million figure represented money that entered the Cale88 account in 2024, Cham checked the bank’s transaction records and confirmed the amount.

“The transaction record shows in 2024 ... P40,138,766.28,” Cham said.

Cham subsequently testified that total outflows for 2024 amounted to P40,001,101.79.

For 2025, Cham said total inflows into the account or accounts amounted to P6,265,915.66.

In his interjection, Senator-judge Francis Pangilinan questioned Cham about Cale88’s peso accounts after the witness said he could not disclose information about the company’s foreign-currency deposits.

“Does Cale88 have a peso account with Security Bank?” Pangilinan asked.

Cham checked the bank’s records and confirmed that Cale88 had two checking accounts.

“Yes, it appears that Cale88 has two checking accounts, but was closed already as of this point in time,” Cham said.

He said both were peso accounts and had been closed in July 2026.

According to Cham, the first account was opened in August 2024, while the second was opened in October 2025.

Cham said the two accounts had 2025 ending balances of P332,530.95 for the account ending in 2013 and P21,164.27 for the account ending in 8581.

Pangilinan asked whether the bank could provide monthly transaction reports showing deposits and withdrawals from Cale88’s accounts.

Cham said he did not have the day-to-day transaction reports with him, explaining that the information was system-generated and that he did not personally monitor the accounts’ daily transactions.

Pangilinan said it would be useful to examine Cale88’s banking transactions from 2024 through 2026, particularly in light of an Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) report he cited during the hearing.

The senator said the AMLC report indicated about P319 million in transactions from China in connection with Cale88.

He said it remained unclear whether those transactions went through Cale88’s peso accounts or a dollar account.

“We don’t know if that was through the peso account or that was through the dollar account,” Pangilinan said.

He added that the amounts moving in and out of Cale88’s accounts from 2024 to 2026 would be “worthy of looking into.”

Asked whether Cale88 Food Corp. maintained a foreign-currency deposit account with Security Bank, Cham said he was not in a position to confirm this, citing confidentiality restrictions.

Presiding Officer Francis Escudero likewise confirmed that Cham was covered by the applicable bank confidentiality rules.

Earlier in the proceedings, Cham also testified about a Security Bank account associated with Duterte's husband, lawyer Manases Carpio.

He said Carpio had one active account with the bank, a peso checking account rather than a foreign-currency account.

Cham said the account was opened on Oct. 25, 2022, and had ending balances of P25,074.34 in 2022, P232,134.27 in 2023, P344,338 in 2024, and P935,923 in 2025.
