KICKSTARTING her clay season campaign, Filipino tennis ace Alexandra "Alex" Eala faces Austrian Julia Grabher in her WTA 500 Linz Open debut on Tuesday in Austria.
The round of 32 clash between Eala and home bet Grabher is set at 5 p.m. in Manila barring any delay.
World No. 46 Eala last saw action at the Miami Open, falling to Karolina Muchova in the round of 16, 0-6, 2-6, on March 24.
On the other hand, world No. 89 Grabher last competed at the Antalya 125 where she exited in the round of 16 with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 loss to Nuria Brancaccio on March 12.
The 29-year-old was supposed to compete at the Miami Open as well but withdrew reportedly due to minor health concerns.
While the 20-year-old Eala is significantly ranked higher than Grabher, the Austrian shapes up to be a problem for Eala on the clay surface.
Grabher, whose career-high rank was No. 54, is widely considered a clay-court specialist.
The 5-foot-7 netter won both of her WTA 125 titles (Bari 2022, Florianópolis 2025). on the surface.
Almost all of Grabher's 16 ITF singles titles were also won on clay.
On the other hand, the 5-foot-9 Eala is more of a hard-court specialist and her lone WTA 125 title Guadalajara last year was played on the hard court.
Eala, whose career-best rank was No. 29, thus needs to raise her level of play.
Ostapenko waiting
If Eala gets past Grabher, she will forge a third match against 2017 French Open titlist Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the round of 16.
Seeded No. 4 in the tournament, world No. 23 Ostapenko received a first-round bye.
Eala first fought Ostapenko at the Miami Open in March last year, winning their round of 64 match, 7-6 (2), 7-5.
Three months later, Eala walked over Ostapenko at the Eastbourne Open, 0-6, 6-2, 3-2, after the Latvian retired due to injury in their round of 16 clash.
Eala and the 28-year-old Ostapenko also met in the Indian Wells doubles last March.
Joining forces with Hailey Baptiste, Ostapenko defeated Eala who partnered with Iva Jovic in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-2.
