FILIPINA tennis star Alex Eala is brimming with excitement as she prepares to partner with legendary American icon Venus Williams in the doubles event of the Bad Homburg Open.
For Eala, the opportunity to share the court with Williams is more than just a dream—it’s a rare honor and a chance to learn from one of the greatest players in the sport, especially given Williams’ vast experience and success in doubles competition.
“I’m really excited. Venus Williams is such a trailblazer and continues to do so much and has done so much for the sport,” Eala said in a recent interview.
Williams owns 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, most of which she won alongside her sister, Serena Williams—who recently made a return to competition at the HSBC Championships in London after four years of retirement.
Eala emphasized how much Williams has influenced the growth of women’s tennis and sports as a whole.
“I like to say that women’s tennis has been a trailblazer for women’s sports and she is a big part of why that is,” she added.
The Eala-Williams duo will open their campaign against Australia’s Alexandra Osborne and American Catherine Harrison—a highly anticipated debut for the unlikely but exciting partnership.
Meanwhile, Eala has climbed to No. 30 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings released Monday, marking a five-spot jump from her previous No. 35 standing.
Eala has now officially secured the position — just one step away from matching her career-high ranking of No. 29, which she set in March.
With another strong showing at the Bad Homburg Open in Germany, the 21-year-old could soon reach a new career-best mark.
The Filipina star is coming off an impressive campaign at the Berlin Open, where she powered her way to the semifinals. Along the way, she stunned top-tier opponents, including Queen’s Club champion Donna Vekic in the first round, world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the second round, and world No. 8 Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
Her remarkable run ended in the semifinals against eventual champion Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic.
Eala now turns her focus to the Bad Homburg Open, where she is set to face Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the opening round on Monday night (Manila time).
