SANDAKAN: Eastern Sabah has recorded zero kidnap-for-ransom cases since January 2020, a milestone credited to the effectiveness of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) in safeguarding the state’s borders and waters.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (pic) said the sharp decline reflects a well-planned strategy involving the police, armed forces and maritime enforcement agency.
He said the improved security outlook has given the government confidence to revive East Coast tourism, with several countries lifting travel advisories following visits by foreign diplomats to the islands.
Tourism growth is already evident, with Tawau Airport now handling up to five daily international flights from China, supported by nine immigration counters.
Saifuddin added that maritime security is being reinforced with a RM470 million annual maintenance budget for three years, new vessels from Turkey and four helicopters under construction, stressing that peace is the result of careful planning and sacrifice by security forces.
