Eddie Howe: Newcastle boss to leave club after five years

  • Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is set to leave the club after five years at the helm.
  • Howe’s shock exit comes just hours after Newcastle were beaten 4-1 by Bristol City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday night, and following a difficult summer so far which has seen the club lose Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, while captain Bruno Guimaraes has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.
  • During his time in charge, Howe led Newcastle to their first domestic trophy in 70 years when the Magpies won the Carabao Cup in 2025, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley, while he also guided the club into the Champions League twice.
  • According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Howe told Newcastle he wants a break after a difficult 2025-26 season that saw the club finish down in 12th place.
  • Howe’s departure comes with the new Premier League season just over three weeks away, and little-known German manager Matthias Jaissle, who is currently in charge of Saudi Arabian team Al-Ahli, has emerged as the leading contender to replace him.
