Egypt have stunning goal against Argentina ruled out by VAR – here’s why

  • Egypt thought they had taken a two-goal lead against Argentina just before the hour mark in their World Cup clash when Zico finished off a stunning counter-attack.
  • Egypt had taken the lead in the first half through Yasser Ibrahim, and the underdogs moved the ball the length of the pitch before Zico found the net following a fine through ball from Mohamed Salah to seemingly go 2-0 up.
  • However, VAR urged the on-field referee to go to his pitchside monitor to review a potential foul prior to Egypt’s counter-attack on Lisandro Martinez.
  • It was determined that the Egypt defender was holding onto Martinez’s shirt, while he also appeared to stand on the Manchester United defender’s foot, and the referee disallowed the goal while awarding a free-kick to Argentina.
  • Zico did then put Egypt 2-0 up in the 67th minute with another impressive counter-attacking goal, but Argentina staged a remarkable comeback to seal a 3-2 win as they advanced to the quarter-finals.
