KINABATANGAN: An elephant carcass, believed to have drifted downstream from the Lot 5 area towards Sukau, was discovered by Kinabatangan River residents on Wednesday.
Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL) Director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said the carcass was suspected to be the same pachyderm reported to have fallen ill several weeks ago.
He said the earlier report could not be acted upon as the department was unable to ascertain which party the complaint had been lodged with.
“The carcass is suspected to be the sick elephant. However, its actual condition could not be confirmed as department personnel have yet to reach the location.
“JHL personnel were unable to proceed to the site today as the boat used to install signboards has yet to return,” he said when contacted by Daily Express.
He said JHL personnel were expected to reach the location early this (Friday) morning to inspect the carcass and obtain further information.
“The actual condition of the carcass can only be determined after department personnel reach the location.
“Further information will be provided by JHL after the inspection and relevant details have been obtained,” he said.
