Engineers urged to take competency exam

Kota Kinabalu: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch is encouraging registered Professional Engineers (Ir.) in Sabah to strengthen their professional qualifications by sitting for the Board of Engineers Malaysia’s (BEM) Professional Competency Examination (PCE) 2026.

The examination will be held nationwide on Oct 24 and 25, with the Sabah examination centre at Institut Latihan Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR), Jalan Kepayan.

IEM Sabah Branch chairman Ir Ts Tan KJ, said the PCE was an important milestone in an engineer’s professional development, particularly for those aspiring to obtain the Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (PEPC) qualification.

“The PCE is more than an examination. It reflects an engineer’s technical competency, professional responsibility, ethical standards and commitment to public safety.

These qualities are essential in delivering safe, reliable and sustainable infrastructure for Sabah,” he said, Monday.

The examination comprises two parts. Part A covers engineering laws, regulations, professional responsibilities and ethics, while Part B assesses candidates’ technical competency in their respective engineering disciplines.

Tan said stronger professional competency among engineers would contribute to Sabah’s infrastructure development, industrial growth and the aspirations of Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0.

“As Sabah continues to develop, we need more competent and professionally qualified engineers who can contribute effectively to infrastructure delivery, innovation and sustainable development,” he added.

He urged registered candidates to prepare thoroughly, familiarise themselves with the examination requirements and uphold the highest standards of engineering professionalism.

Candidates are advised to check their examination arrangements through the MyBEM portal and bring the required identification documents.

IEM Sabah wished all candidates success in the forthcoming examination.
