Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has expressed concern over flash floods that hit several areas in Inanam and Manggatal following heavy downpours on Thursday afternoon.
The deluge inundated Inanam Old Town, Jalan Kionsom, Jalan Kitobu, Jalan Sepangar, and stretches along Jalan Tuaran from KM8 to KM10 and KM12 to KM16, stranding motorists and disrupting residents.
Sabah IEM chairman Tan KJ urged authorities to assess the flooding from an integrated catchment and engineering perspective rather than drawing premature conclusions.
He noted that technical evaluations must examine rainfall intensity, drainage and culvert capacities, upstream runoff, land-use changes, and the impact of coinciding tidal conditions on downstream discharge.
Tan added that Sabah IEM stands ready to collaborate with government agencies and local councils to provide technical expertise for sustainable flood-mitigation measures while advising motorists to avoid traversing deep floodwaters.
