Welcome to the future rage-craze on Malaysian roads – where the battle for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points becomes the new national sport for Malaysia.
Forget badminton it is all about snagging that coveted charging hose. Traffic jams were just a warm-up; now we have EV drivers honking not for right of way but for charging supremacy.
We might just end up fighting like those on mainland China, where fists' fights often occur when drivers compete to get their electric cars charged. Videos of EV drivers fighting for charging points have gone viral.
Picture this future scenario: families strategically planning road trips around charging station pit stops, turning vacations into a quest for the elusive power socket.
National holidays will likely become an annual showdown, with citizens asking, “Are you celebrating Merdeka or fighting for a charging spot?” Or better yet “Ni Hari Raya or Hari Gila?”
And there's Minister Nik Nazmi, Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister setting ambitious EV targets like a game show host. “1.5 million EVs by 2040, folks! But wait, there's more – 10,000 charging points by 2025!”
But for now, there are more than 10,000 registered EVs in the country and only 900 public EV chargers. The ratio, I imagine, would only get worse by 2040.
It's a numbers game where the real challenge is trying to keep up with demand while preventing road rage from becoming an Olympic event.
In this electrifying saga, the only thing running out faster than battery chargers is probably the patience of Malaysian drivers. I doubt that we'll be behaving differently from our neighbours in Mainland China. But I am counting on you keeping your cool in the face of challenges over a shortage of chargers.
So, my fellow Malaysians, coming soon to a charging point near you: the EV Thunderdome, where only the juiced survive!
