MANILA, Philippines — Officers and members of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Retirees and Ex-Employees Association Inc. (Rexeai) said they are disappointed over comments made by Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste, branding the agency as the “National Bureau of Imbento” (invention).
In a statement dated on Monday but only made public on Friday, the NBI-Rexeai said those are remarks unbecoming of a lawmaker.
“While we understand that humor can sometimes serve as a means of coping with serious matters, your choice of words does not amuse us. Instead, it reflects a troubling disregard for the integrity of a vital law enforcement agency that has dedicated itself to upholding justice to our nation,” the association, through its president Ricardo Diaz, said.
“As a lawmaker, you hold a position of great responsibility and influence. Your statements should embody the respect and seriousness that legal processes demand. By trivializing the work of the NBI, you not only undermine the agency’s essential role but also insult the countless individuals who have devoted their careers to serving and protecting our communities,” they added.
They also said that the young lawmaker’s comments carry “significant weight”.
“Your comments may have been intended as a lighthearted quip, but they carry significant weight. The NBI operates at the forefront of law enforcement, tackling some of the most pressing issues facing our society. It is imperative that we, as a nation, support and respect our law enforcement agencies, especially during challenging times,” the association said.
“We urge you to reconsider your approach and to communicate with the seriousness and respect that befits your office. It is crucial for lawmakers to foster an environment that supports legal processes rather than diminish them with thoughtless statements,” they added.
The lawmaker was urged to reflect on his words and the impact it could bring on the agency.

Leviste, along with his mother, Senator Loren Legarda, are both out of the country, following a case against them by the Office of the Ombudsman, over his solar projects, as well as a case against the lawmaker over an alleged plot against Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.
