The finale of medal tally at the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Phnom Penh have given training developers, managers, and coaches not only a 'call to arms' but also a 'battle plan' to success for the 33rd SEA Games in Bangkok comes 2025. Having used Kirkpatrick level of evaluation when developing training programs for airlines and commercial executives for over 25 years, the challenge of transferring learned behaviours in the simulator to actual performance at work remains the key link to success.
Training evaluation is both science and art. There is an urgent need to evaluate training. Savvy business professionals and enlightened organisations know that training has no value unless what is learned gets applied on the job, and the subsequent on-the-job impact performance contributes in accomplishing the real organisational outcomes.
According to the author of the book, 'Training on Trial', Dr. Jim Kirkpatrick, "Around the world, training and development is in the state of crisis. The New World Kirkpatrick Model will show how to create an effective training evaluation plan for any program so that you can show the organisational value of your work. At the very same time, an effective plan will ensure that your valuable, limited resources are dedicated to the programs that will create the most impact. It provides a substantial body of knowledge and a quantifiable approach that will embrace the new world view of the role of training and evaluation, we can become an indispensable partner to the business we serve".
The Kirkpatrick Model was developed by Dr. Donald Kirkpatrick (1921-2014) in the mid-1950s as he was writing his PhD dissertation. His goal was to effectively measure the impact of the management development programs he was teaching at the University of Wisconsin Management Institute in USA and is the most recognised in the world.
Perhaps, the next time we should greet our colleagues or sportsmen with, "How's it going on with training?" From whatever sector - private, government, sports, school or nonprofit organisation - the examples and clear thinking about the Kirkpatrick levels of training evaluation will serve as preparation to "What has training done to help us?"
