Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has defended his decision to make seven changes in Wednesday's Carabao Cup defeat to Leicester City.
The Magpies have been eliminated after losing 4-2 on penalties to their Premier League rivals.
Speaking after the game, Bruce explained: "I only made two changes that weren't forced on me. The goalkeeper - vital I keep him motivated.
"The others I couldn't risk Atsu becase he hasn't played for weeks and young Longy (Sean) - I think three games in six days was too much for him considering his knee injury."
Carabao Cup holders Manchester City have drawn Preston North End in the third-round.
