Residents of a small village in India were left speechless after attending what they believed was the funeral of a respected 74-year-old man—only to discover that he was still alive and watching the ceremony unfold.
The incident took place in Konchi village, located in the Guraru block of Bihar’s Gaya district. The man, Mohan Lal, a retired Indian Air Force officer known for his social work, had decided to stage his own funeral as an elaborate experiment to find out how many people would truly mourn him after his supposed death.
According to local reports, news of Mohan’s passing spread quickly through the area, prompting hundreds of villagers to gather to pay their final respects. Many arrived carrying garlands and flowers, preparing to bid farewell to the man they believed had served his community with dedication for decades.
At the ceremony, Mohan was seen lying motionless inside a coffin, wrapped in a white cloth and surrounded by flowers, as mourners chanted prayers and wept. The scene appeared completely authentic, with traditional funeral songs playing softly in the background and villagers solemnly preparing to carry the coffin to the cremation site.
The solemn atmosphere turned into chaos when Mohan suddenly revealed that the entire event was staged. He explained that he had orchestrated the funeral to witness firsthand how much affection and respect people truly held for him while he was still alive.
Mohan reportedly asked his close friends to assist in arranging every detail of the ritual — from decorating the bier to performing religious rites — all to make the ceremony as realistic as possible. He later told those in attendance that he had long wondered how people would react to his passing, and the curiosity had grown stronger as he aged.
He was quoted as saying that after a lifetime of service, he wanted to know whether people genuinely valued his presence or simply took him for granted. His unexpected appearance at his own funeral left many in shock — some relieved, others angered by what they viewed as a distasteful prank.
While the bizarre act stirred a mix of amusement and outrage, Mohan’s “living funeral” became the talk of the region. Many villagers later admitted that the incident made them reflect on the importance of expressing gratitude and appreciation for others before it’s too late.
